About Sign Language Society

The ATU Sign Language Society is a relaxed, beginner-friendly community for anyone with an interest in Irish Sign Language (ISL). Whether you are an ATU student, a member of staff, a family member, or someone from the wider community, you are very welcome to join us.

We meet weekly for informal drop-in sessions where people can practise signing, build confidence, and learn together in a friendly and supportive environment. This is not a formal class, and no previous experience is needed. Whether you know a few signs, can fingerspell the alphabet, or are completely new to ISL, you can join at your own pace.

The Society aims to create opportunities for people to connect through sign language, raise awareness of Deaf culture, and promote greater accessibility and inclusion both within ATU and across the wider community.

Deaf and hard-of-hearing people are especially welcome, whether to practise ISL, meet others, share their experiences, or simply spend time in a space where sign language is valued and respected.

Everyone is welcome—come along, meet new people, learn something new, and be part of a growing community that celebrates communication, accessibility, and inclusion.
